League play reached the halfway point at beautiful Leland High School.
San Francisco Giants 12 Oakland A's 7 in Game #1
Four of the SF Giants showed up (and one left half-way through) to play the A’s, but it was the pool players who punched out the Oakland guys. Mark “Cosmo” Gemello, Dave Chilcote, and Heath Keller combined to throttle the A’s batters when it counted, while giving up 13 hits. G-Man started and survived five innings giving way to Chilly before he realized he was supposed to pitch in the next game. Keller finished up with a dazzling slurvy, knuckle, slider, heater combo that had everybody off-balance. Oehrlein(5), Jemes(4), and Big Al Henderson battled through an amoebic strike zone for the A’s holding the Giants to only seven hits.
Gemello with two hits and two ribbies and Keller with a double and single for five RBI’s led the G-men. DeCruz had two hits, Gault chipped in a hit and a ribby, while Jim Realini drove in two RBI’s.
The A’s spread their 13 hits around with Chase, Hilton, Mello, and Henderson each with two (although Big Al got caught “chatting” with Keller on a pick-off play.) Yost, Jemes, and Luis also had hits while Dorn crashed a big double in the second to clear the bases for an early lead by the A’s.
Fresno Giants 3 New York Giants 1 in Game #2
The afternoon game was a classic, well-played game that featured accurate pitching, good fielding, and timely hitting. The folks at PETA (or the local raccoons) will be proud of the guys that help save the “Plover” eggs behind shortstop. Ray Miailovich and Dr. Guy Peabody teamed-up to hold the NY Giants to one first inning run on eight hits. Bobby Hartkop and Frank Weishaar limited the Fresno Giants to five hits with only three runs in the second and third, but that was enough.
Steve Bennett with two hits including a monster off the left field fence led Fresno’s hitting driving in the only runs they would need. Peabody, Miailovich, and Moochey Hughey each made a single. Steve Bennett also made a couple of tumbling “Web-Gem” catches in left field.
Frank Weishaar and Mike Marks each had two singles for the New Yorkers. Burrell, Conroy, and Hartkop each contributed singles. Chilly led off the game with a double to right centerfield.
Next games are at Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton on July 10th
Reminder to all regular players, do not forget to tell your coach by Thursday morning, before NOON if you are going to play or you will stand a good chance of losing your spot on the team for the weekend to a pool player.
