OAKLAND A’s & SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS FANTASY
2005 BASEBALL
LEAGUE
FROM THE STANDS
JUNE 12, 2005
Jim Realini
Today found league play with a triple-header at beautiful Carney Lansford Field at Wilcox High School. The weather was gorgeous and three cheers to Chris and Bob for umpiring three straight without wilting. They earned their tall cold ones at days end.
New York Giants 3 San Jose Giants 2 in Game #1
The NY Giants snapped the San Jose win streak at seven in a well-played thriller when Greg Terra’s second single off his borrowed Bamboozala Bat drove in Mike Shaffer running for the redoubtable Richie Thomas in the top of the ninth. In the bottom half of the inning “Bad Chilly” showed up to plunk the first three of four batters loading the bases. Fortunately, Chilly forced Heath Keller at second before he hit Angie Simon to load’em up. It was great to see Alex Simon conducting a post-game interview for his radio-announcing resume with no hard feelings about hitting his mom. JC Penney flied out to Terra in left field and Greg’s quick throw to third base snuffed any tag up attempt by the fleet Steve Bennett. Then Chilly got Tom McCampbell to pop-up to third base to end the game and serve San Jose their initial loss of the season.
“JR” Riley led San Jose with two singles, while Mike Simon, Steve Bennett, Rob Weber, and the crafty Bill Wineberg each contributed one-base hits. Heath Keller pitched another six strong innings striking out six and Mike Simon finished.
Chilly had a single and a double to lead the NY Giants along with Terra’s two big hits, while Mike Shaffer, Bobby Hartkop, Richie Thomas (hiding from the Lodi Taliban and now Rob Weber – you’ll see why in a second), and Billy Doherty each chipped in a single. Hartkop pitched the first three and gave up ONE EARNED RUN with 2 K’s while Dave Chilcote went the last six on four strikeouts, giving up ONE EARNED RUN (sorry Richie, you owe Rob $100!!)
Fresno Giants 6 San Francisco Giants 3 in Game #2
The mid-day game saw the Fresno Giants beat the SF Giants behind some very strong pitching by Mark Bruzzone and superb fielding behind him. Bruzzone shut out the flailing SF guys with one hit over the first six innings with five strikeouts. Carl Vargas finished up and survived a futile ninth inning rally to avoid a save. Adam Schneider led Fresno with two solid hits while Mike Miller continues to pound the ball with a loud double in the first and two near homers for outs to the left field fence. Bruzzone, Matt Schmuck, John Haines, Ruben Donig, and Lorne Johnson each cracked singles.
The SF Giants, playing all to reminiscent of their big league counter parts, just couldn’t get it going until the ninth when they made it a respectable loss with three runs on three hits. Dave DeCruz, Ray Miailovich, Dave Montelatto, Mark Travis, Mooch Hughey, and Greg Terra (there’s that “Diablo” guy again!) all slapped singles. Mike DesJardins and Ray Miahlovic split the pitching recording six K’s.
Kansas City A’s 12
Oakland A’s 5 in Game #3
The Kansas City A’s broke open a 2-2 tie in the sixth and
pounded the Oakland A’s 13-5 behind the steady 8K pitching of Krevocheza,
Wagner, and McAusland. Oh yeah, Dave Gayner started the KC scoring with a “big
fly” over the fence in the fifth followed by a single in the sixth. McAusland
had a triple in the sixth followed by a single in the seventh. Pat Macias had
two hits and Calloway, Fitzpatrick, Glover, Krevocheza, and Wagner also smacked
bingles to bury the Oakland team.
Purcell Hall
brought a loud bat to the game with a double and a triple. Yost, Oehrlein,
Amaro, Henderson, Chase, Hilton, and Dorn each slapped safely in this lopsided
affair. The Oakland A’s found out that you just can’t “give” anything
(especially walks and errors) to KC because they’ll take it and make you suffer!
The next two games are at Leland High School on June 19th, FATHERS DAY
Reminder to all regular players, do not forget to tell your coach by Thursday morning, before NOON if you are going to play or you will stand a good chance of losing your spot on the team for the weekend to a pool player.
