New York Giants 9 Fresno Giants 4 in Game #1

League play returned on an unseasonably cold day to blustery Riordan High School with a battle of winless Giant teams.  The hot performances of Bobby Hartkop and Dave Chilcote kept the Haines-less Giants winless in April.  Chilly threw 6 innings with 11 K’s while Hartkop finished on the mound striking out the side in the last inning.  Hartkop also led the New York hitters with two doubles and a single.  George Parsons and Mike Hughey smacked doubles, too.  Greg Terra had two hits while Terry Lee, Mike Shaffer, Steve Bennett, and Bob Weisharr each made singletons.

Fresno certainly smacked the ball hard especially Paul Macale who almost tore Chilly’s thumb off in the sixth with a single through the mound.  Adam Schneider playing in his grey ghost uniform crushed a triple to right field in the fourth to go along with his eighth inning single.  Mike Miller led Fresno with three hits, while Dr. Guy Peabody and Mark Bruzzone each had two hits apiece.  Vargas, Pederson, Weil, and Wallace also made a hit each.  Ray “The Baseball Monster” Doherty and Lorne “Gold Cup” Johnson earned sombreros for the day.

San Francisco Giants 10 Oakland A's 2 in Game #2

The afternoon game was windier than the morning bringing to mind visions of Candlestick West as the San Francisco Giants throttled the Oakland A’s 10-2 behind steady pitching by Mike DesJardins and Mark Gemello.  “DJ” threw approximately 62 pitches in the first inning but only gave up one hit and no runs on his way to six solid innings with 4 K’s.  “G-Man” closed out the game with three “cosmopolitan” innings and 3 K’s.  In the bottom of the first DJ and G-Man ganged up on the Oakland pitcher for two loud doubles into the gale force winds.  The rest of the Giants chipped in behind DJ’s 2-hit, 5-RBI day with 2-hit days by Gemello, Shafer, and DeCruz, while West (3 runs), DaCosta, Montellato, Nye, and Terra each made hits.

Elaine Ortiz tried to rally the A’s with a loud hit to right and Don Luis had 2 hits and earned the team player award by taking a hit by the pitcher, were not enough A’s to crack the Giant hurlers today.  Al Henderson made some terrific plays at third, but there just wasn’t enough offense to overcome the Giants.

Reminder to all regular players, do not forget to tell your coach by Thursday morning, before NOON if you are going to play or you will stand a good chance of losing your spot on the team for the weekend to a pool player.
